We met a local guide mid-morning for a tour of the Tinganes area of Tórshavn. Tinganes is the historical location of the ancient (and current) Faroese government. The name means “parliament jetty” or “parliament point” in Faroese. The original parliament was established in 825 and is one of the oldest in the world, along with the ones in Iceland and the Isle of Man.
Many of the current buildings date from the 16th and 17th
centuries (rebuilt after the area burnt down) and are still used as government offices. The entire area certainly looks like it
harkens back to a long time ago.
The Tinganes area is a point of land that divides the harbor in
two parts.
The current parliament building is just around the corner from our
hotel.
And the city offices are in a stone building that was the former
elementary school.
It was a nice short tour but we learned a lot.
We also spent some time walking around the harbor...
and the town as we really enjoy them both.
We spent much of the rest of the day in the hotel working on planning future trips and working on this blog.
