June 16 – Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

During breakfast we had a great conversation with Rick and Liz from St. Louise and Tom and Jackie from Florida.  They have been in the Faroes for a couple of weeks and are heading out tomorrow.

We checked out of the hotel and then to Vestmanna to catch a cruise along the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs.  We were there early so we went through their Saga Museum, which talked about some of the early founding stories of the Faroes.

We also ran into Rick, Liz, Tom and Jackie who had stopped in at the center.  They hadn’t planned on the cruise but decided to take it as well.

The harbor was full of the usual colorful boats.

After lunch we all piled onto the boat along with 30 or so other people.  The cruise out of the bay gave us good views of Vestmanna and the salmon ponds.

The Vestmanna cliffs are truly incredible.  They are very, very steep and we were able to get fairly close.

The boat went into through narrow sounds,

into deep grottoes, and through a couple of sea caves.

On the return we saw sheep right along the cliff base at the waters edge.

And of course there were a lot of birds to been seen.

Once we were back on shore we all said goodbye and we headed out for our drive to Estreymoy Island and the little town of Gjógv near the northern most tip.

The drive was beautiful…

and the town of Gjógv was in a beautiful location with views of Kalsoy island in the distance.

The hotel was very simple and the only place in town to eat was the hotel…and they had exactly one item on the menu, lamb.  However, when pressed they did offer a vegetarian option that was very good.

The nights stay light here until very late as well, but not as late as in Iceland.
